How to Install a Meta Pixel on Your Website

Reading Time: 5 Minutes

Before you even think about running ads, you need to install a Meta Pixel on your website. The Meta Pixel is what helps Meta see who is visiting your website, so it can learn their attributes and recommend people who may be interested as well. Even if you don’t think you will be running ads any time soon, here’s how to install a Meta Pixel on your website so you can accumulate more data over time.

How to Install a Meta Pixel on Your Website

To create your Meta Pixel, you have to start on Meta.

  1. Go to Events Manager.
  2. Click Connect Data Sources and select Web.
  3. Select Meta Pixel and click Connect.
  4. Add your Pixel Name.
  5. Enter your website URL to check for easy setup options.
  6. Click Continue.

Once you’ve created your Pixel, you will need to install the Meta Pixel on your website. The installation will vary based on how your website was created. There are 3 ways to install the pixel.

1 – Manually Add Meta Pixel to Your Website

  1. Go to Events Manager.
  2. Click the Data sources icon on the left side of the page.
  3. Select the Pixel you want to set up.
  4. Click Continue Pixel Setup.
  5. Select Meta Pixel and click Connect.

  8. Find the header of your website, or locate the header template in your CMS or web platform.
  9. Paste the base code at the bottom of the header section, just above the closing head tag.
  1. Click Continue.
  2. Optional: Toggle on Automatic Advanced Matching and verify the customer information you want to send.
  3. Click Continue.
  4. Add events using the Event Setup Tool or by manually adding code to your website.
  5. Click Done.

If you don’t see your platform, use 1 of the other 2 ways to set up your pixel.

3 – Email Instructions to Add Meta Pixel to Your Website

If someone else updates the code on your website, follow these steps to email them your Meta Pixel setup instructions.

  1. Go to Events Manager.
  2. Click the Data sources tab on the left side of the page.
  3. Select the Pixel you want to set up.
  4. Click Continue Pixel Setup.
  5. Click Email Instructions.
  6. Enter the recipient’s email address.
  7. Click Send at the bottom of the page.

Once your Meta Pixel is installed on your website, you can test to see if it is working.

How to Make Sure Your Meta Pixel is Working

Meta has a native tool that allows you to check that your Meta Pixel is working, so you don’t miss out on any valuable data.

  1. Go to Meta Events Manager.
  2. Click the Data sources icon on the left side of the page.
  3. Select your Pixel or app.
  4. Click Test Events. Activity is only recorded while the Test Events web page is kept open.
  5. If you’re testing app events, open your app on your phone. For website events, find the Test Browser Events section, enter your website URL and click Open Website. This opens your website in a separate window or tab.
  6. Interact with your app or website to test the events you’ve already set up. Your interactions will appear in the Test Events tab within 30 seconds.
  7. (Optional) Click on the filter icon to select what activity types and details are displayed. You can filter by:
  8. Activity types
  9. Activity details
    • URL
    • Parameters
    • Active Issues: This can include errors and warnings related to your event setup.
  10. (Optional) Click Clear Activity when you’re done testing events. The activity will still appear in your Meta Events Manager, Ads Reporting and Audience Creation results.

If your events don’t appear in the Test Events tool, then double-check that you installed your pixel exactly as it was listed (when you created it) and it is installed correctly (based on the method you selected to install).

That’s it! Your Meta Pixel should be up and running whenever you are ready to run Meta Ads.
